10 Useful Tips for Cleaning Out Your Closet
Got a really messy closet? That’s a nightmare situation.
We know exactly what it’s like: You’ve left it a whole year and clutter has really built up. There’s hardly any space left and yet you’ve just been on a shopping spree and bought lots of new clothes. Something has to give!
The problem is that cleaning out a closet is a really hard task (much harder than many people seem to appreciate). Moreover, you just don’t wanna do it.
The good news is that there are ways to make your life a bit easier. In this article, Beauty and Tips takes a look at 10 little known tips for cleaning out your closet.
Clean Your Bedroom First
“Wait a minute. I’m cleaning my closet and now I’ve gotta clean my bedroom as well?”
Yep!
Honestly, if you clean your room first, you’ll feel so much more motivated to tackle your closet. For one thing, you’ll be in a nice, clean space. For another thing, you’ll have already completed a pretty big task and will be feeling mighty accomplished. This will give you motivation to keep the momentum going by tackling your closet.
You go girl!
Turn Your Hangers Around
This hack is one that won’t reap rewards until at least six months down the line.
So basically what you do is you turn your hangers around so that the handle is facing you.
Why on earth would you do this?
If after six months there are clothes that you clearly haven’t worn, you need to ask yourself “will I ever seriously wear them again?”
If the answer is clearly a resounding “no” then you know what to do.
Neat, huh?
Invest in a Shoe Rack
Many ladies are addicted to shoes. The problem is that, while we look after shoes when we first buy them, it isn’t long before we’re dumping them on our closet floor in a pile.
After a year or so, there are at least five piles of shoes all piled on top of each other on our closet floor. It’s not cool and it looks like a mess!
Plus, it’s disheartening to see what was once our favourite shoe buried underneath several other pairs of shoes.
As such, it’s a really good idea to invest in a shoe rack. This will help to keep your shoes neat and tidy, and it will also prevent them from getting crushed and bent out of shape by shoes that are piled on top of them (as well as boots OMG).
Wear Each Item In Your Closet
This is going to take some time, but the thing is – you won’t wear each one. There’ll be some items of clothing that you take one look at and think “WHAT WAS I THINKING” before ditching it.
That’s good – it means you can definitely throw that one out.
For everything else, try them on and see how you feel in them. Do they still fit? Do you feel confident in them? Or are they dated?
If they don’t fit anymore, or if you don’t feel confident in them or if they’re dated, you can throw them away or donate them. Or give them to a friend.
Bring a Friend Along
Okay, it’s Chore Day – and who likes that?
To make Chore Day a bit more bearable, why not invite a friend over for a bit of moral support?
As well as moral support, your friend can also bring sandwiches, banter and plenty of entertainment.
And when the going gets tough and you just wanna quit and do something else, you can hang out with your friend for a bit before returning to your closet. It’s a win/win situation.
Check For Damages
If you’re really not sure which clothes you should keep and which ones you should throw away, the best thing to do is check for damages.
For example, if an item of clothing has become damaged, it needs to be thrown out ASAP. It’s the same if it’s stained or torn.
Admit it – you’ll never wear a permanently stained dress ever again.
(and if you would? Eww)
So rifle through your clothes and inspect for damages.
Install Hook On Your Doors
If you’re rapidly running out of space inside your closet and literally don’t have room for any new items BUT you also don’t know what else to throw away/donate, the next best thing to do is to install door hooks.
Door hooks mean that you can hang accessories, handbags and scarves in your closet without having to throw a beloved item away, or stash them in your room where they just don’t look right.
Door hooks are also cheap and super easy to install.
Oh, and they also mean that you can buy another handbag. Yay for door hooks!
Fold What Needs To Be Folded
Do you know what needs to be folded and what needs to be hung? If you don’t, there’s a good chance that you’re short on space precisely because you’re folding what could and should be hung up instead.
Bulkier clothing items? They can save you so much space if you fold them instead of hanging them. Then, you can simply dumpy them on your top shelf. This will free up your garment rod, too.
Hide Away Seasonal Items
If it’s the middle of summer and your winter coat is taking up lots of room in your closet, we have one question: What you playing at, girl?
Seasonal items should only be on display at the appropriate times. Otherwise, they’re just taking up valuable space.
When it’s summer, make sure that only outfits you can wear are on display. Everything else can be hidden away in garment bags that you then hide under your bed.
